Use the Right Pallets
A Millwood customer found themselves confronted with a major challenge in managing their warehouse space. They were using several pallet SKUs to accommodate their clients' many different types of products. All of these pallets had to be kept indoors, which took up valuable warehouse space, hampering the efficiency of the operations.
Using the Millwood Lab, our team of experts created a universal pallet design that could accommodate all the products they were storing for shipment. The standardized pallet freed up nearly 1,000 square feet of warehouse space.
The type of pallets you use can have a significant impact on your warehouse space. Selecting the right pallets, whether that means standardizing your pallet or ordering them custom, can help you improve stacking efficiency and reduce the need for excess inventory storage.
Optimize Vertical Space
Making the most of your warehouse’s vertical space is one of the most effective ways to increase storage capacity without having to expand your physical footprint.
In the case above, Millwood helped the customer by designing a universal pallet that allowed for better stacking and storage. By implementing taller shelving units or pallet racking systems that can safely accommodate vertical stacking, you can store more products in the same area. This approach not only maximizes space but also improves organization, making it easier to access and manage inventory.
Reorganize Your Layout
Reorganizing your layout to group similar items together, place high-turnover products in easily accessible areas, and reduce unnecessary movement can lead to significant time and space savings.
The result is a more orderly environment that not only optimizes space but also enhances productivity and reduces the risk of errors.
Regular Audits and Maintenance
Regularly auditing your warehouse and maintaining your equipment are critical steps in sustaining efficiency over time.
Even solutions that seem small on the surface, like optimizing pallet size, can lead to significant improvements. Conducting regular audits helps identify underutilized areas and maintenance needs that, if addressed, can prevent space from being wasted. Ensuring that your pallets, shelving and racking systems are in good condition also helps maintain safety and efficiency, avoiding costly disruptions.
Millwood’s experience in optimizing warehouse space for our customers has shown that thoughtful design and strategic planning can uncover significant improvements.
